I joined Sky back in 1995 as a temp working weekends – I saw Sky as an up and coming company that fitted in with my lifestyle. Being a single parent and working part-time during the week as a Nursery Nurse, I was at a loose end at the weekends and wanted to earn extra money to buy a better car. Sky offered me the hours.
The people, the benefits and the interesting work led me to pursue a permanent role – a decision I’ve never looked back on. I gave up my job as a Nursery Nurse and the hours I worked allowed me to go to University and re-train, gaining a Post Graduate Diploma in HR Management in 2003.
When I started I was an advisor on the phone. I worked my way up from weekends to weekdays and I now head up Customer Service. I look after a fantastic team who are passionate about both the company and the customers we look after.
Training is tailored to the department you work in – you get a great understanding of Sky, the departments and the type of calls you’ll be dealing with. And you’re not put on the phone until you’re ready and have passed all the courses. When you do come out onto the phones you have a buddy who will be with you every step of the way.
The people, the benefits and the interesting work led me to pursue a permanent role. I look after a fantastic team who are passionate about both the company and the customers we look after. We know how to look after our people and Sky see people as their biggest asset.
We also have SVQ qualifications that both customer advisors and management can go through as well as a Modern Apprentice qualification that brings young people into the organisation. Management training is modular and fits into the working week so that new managers can do on the job training and classroom training.
I think the rewards are excellent, we have a fantastic entertainment package, plus a pension and healthcare benefits. We know how to look after our people and Sky see people as their biggest asset. We do everything from helping them to purchase a new bike or hybrid car to offering physiotherapy on-site.
Every day is different, here, and I’ve experienced a lot. I’ve stood onstage at the Lyceum Theatre, presenting to all our middle managers, and volunteered with my team to paint elderly people’s homes.
People want to join in because they recognise that not only are we a great place to work, they know we have fantastic brand values. Our work in the communities and environment attracts people too and the fact that we strive every day to get better.
