How our programme works and your key responsibilities:

As an Apprentice on this two year programme, you’ll be part of the whole editorial process. From planning and news gathering through to on-air production, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your fantastic creative ideas to how we tell our stories across all platforms at Sky Sports News.

  • In the first year, you’ll rotate around key departments of the Sky Sports News operation. Rotations include: the planning desk, Production team, Graphics and Digital content team. You’ll also be given opportunities to shadow Reporters and work on location.
  • You’ll spend time at college working towards achieving your qualification with support of a dedicated tutor.
  • In the second year, you’ll choose an area to specialise in.

As an Apprentice on this two year programme, you’ll be  part of the whole editorial process. From news gathering to researching stories, through to booking guests and writing scripts. Gaining insight into one of the world's leading news organisations, you'll learn how we deliver news across all our platforms - on TV, mobile phones, on social media and to commercial radio stations.

 

  • In the first year, you’ll spend your first three months at college as you work towards achieving your qualification; attending our offices when required to support your training. 
  • When the course is completed, you’ll spend time across departments within Sky News. This will include spending time with Reporters, Producers, Camera Crews, Gallery staff and Researchers and eventually work across all areas of our output - TV, mobile, radio and social media.
  • In the second year, we'll help you select an area to start specialising in.

Technology (Livingston)

As an Apprentice on this programme, you’ll be placed within one of three teams depending on the outcome of your assessment centre. The teams are as follows:

  • Operations – This department is responsible for Design, Deliver and Support our Tech UK infrastructure, which includes Virtualization, Servers, UNIX, Databases, Data Centre, Storage and Workload Automation. You’ll learn about how these systems are crucial to keeping all of Sky’s Business areas working to ensure a seamless customer experience for any that uses or contacts Sky.
  • Project Management/Coordination – In this role, you’ll play a key part in managing Infrastructure Delivery projects involving changes to technical infrastructure and support services.  This covers a wide variety of projects including In-Building and Data Centre Projects.
  • UK Information Systems Team – You will gain experience in a number of Software Engineering areas, which may include Testing, Automation, Technical Analysis, Operational Support and Development. These teams provide Technical solutions and services to all our Contact Centre and Engineer communities as well as maintaining the systems required to support various online and interactive services provided to Sky’s 11 million UK customer base. 

 

Qualification achieved: Level 8 IT and Telecoms Professionals SCQF

What’s your career journey been like up until now?  

I left school at sixteen after my GCSE’s so didn’t ever really know what I wanted to do. I didn’t specialise in a particular field via further education, accepting that wasn’t the route for me and started to gain work experience and always networking.

My first proper job was working for the Home Office, but my passion for meeting new people encouraged me to move away from a clerical type role and into Sales, mostly with property.  At about the age of 22 I set myself a goal to work for a company with a household name where I could be influential.

I moved out of Sales into Client Services, using years of relationship building and networking skills. I assessed what I could take away from the industry I was working in, it wasn’t just about “servicing clients” and their accounts, I was approaching my mid-twenties with no real career, purpose or job satisfaction, so when I got offered a job at a corporate domain registrar, client servicing 30 well-known brands I started to learn how to manage a domain portfolio effectively. Firstly, to service my clients to the highest standards & because I saw it as an opportunity to meet my own goal set only a few years before, to work for a well-known brand.

Five years after that goal was set, I was offered a role here. Five years into my career here I’ve been given every opportunity to have a say in how I want my role to evolve and have changed job titles three times: Domain Management Analyst to Domain Management Specialist, to being the Online Compliance Manager for the business making a difference in my role every day. Both goals smashed .

What does a typical day working here look like for you?

Satisfying. My day is so varied, I like to call it a hybrid role, a 50/50 split between Business and Technical. I simplify technical jargon to business colleagues who are working on launching websites they have no idea how to get online and then working closely with our Technical Implementation teams to make it happen. Overall I’m in my role to support my colleagues, from a simple idea they may have in the online world at Sky and not knowing where to start, to facilitating a complete relaunch, renaming of a critical site.

I make myself known every day, holding online compliance talks so teams know who to approach should they ever feel stuck, having meetings face to face where possible or scheduling regular visits to travel to our other sites to build strong relationships around the business. Sometimes that means showing up with treats to say thank you to other support teams for the help they give me in being successful in my own role. No day is typical here, you get to make it what you want - especially when you work for a manager that encourages your creative flair and motivation to always be making a difference.

If you’ve been here over one year, how have you made a difference in your role?

The best days are always when I get to register a new domain name knowing this is the business’ “next big thing”. Then months later hearing an advert on the radio thinking, I was the starting point and part of that, every big idea should start with a domain name and that’s where I fit in here, sometimes it’s not as simple as just registering a name, there are many factors to consider which as a specialist in my role I get to advise the business on to ensure we are also protecting the brand, making sure our customers are safe online and we have an efficient strategy to make it work seamlessly.

What’s been your proudest moment since working here?

My director put my name forward to run our sports games at the annual department wide summer party. The idea was to break away from the normal football and volleyball games they had for a few years to encourage more people to get involved.

I organised a not so conventional course of physical and skilled activities that teams had to work their way through but right to the last moment with a department of about 2000 sceptical colleagues, I didn’t have many teams sign up. On the day was a different story however, after spending the afternoon setting up, when everyone arrived, I was inundated with teams now wanting to get involved. I had senior managers on space hoppers, grown men break the tug of war rope and others who were competing for the title of hook the duck champion. It ran over time with teams trying to persuade me not to pack up. It was such a good turn out with so much positive feedback and just a lot of fun. It was a daunting task but one that has given me the opportunity to get involved with something out of my job description every year. I definitely felt privileged to be asked but more that I didn’t give up at the first hurdle and it was a success.

What’s the most enjoyable thing about your job?

Working in Technology I love that I get to make technology sound fun to colleagues who don’t see it that way, teach them about an area that they have no idea about and engage them with fun facts about why I do what I do. I get to network to my heart’s content, build relationships with anyone from grads to senior managers. I love that no matter what level you are,  if you know your stuff you’re really respected for your knowledge.

Describe your work/life balance?

I have been lucky enough to balance it how I like. The great thing has been working for a manager that knows I am passionate and in return I am trusted. Sometimes I just need to start work late, maybe attempt gym in the morning but not too thrilled about waking up at 6am to do so, so I manage a lie in, go to the gym and start a bit later, equally start earlier if I have evening commitments. Other times when I am missing my mums home cooked curry I work from my parents’ home and get the chance to catch up with them for a few days too.

What advice would you give to others trying to develop their career?

All the little things will add up, you are the only person that can represent yourself. Be the person that puts their hand up to a task that may be out of your job description. Be that person that honours what they commit to. Be a reliable source. Be open minded, say Hi to everyone including the guy that waters the plants, don’t be selective with who you help out, you may find your biggest cheerleaders are the ones you didn’t expect it from. Be the person that asks questions and lastly, walk past an unfamiliar face every day at work and smile at them.

Martin tells us about his experience in Change Delivery, from Grad scheme to Business Analyst...

Job title: Business Analyst

What area of Sky do you work in? Change Delivery  

What’s your career journey been like up until now?  I studied Physics at the University of St Andrews for five years. Once I was close to getting my Masters, I decided that further academic research was not for me, so I looked to use my problem solving skills in a more corporate and fast-paced environment. I joined the Change Delivery Graduate Scheme and after two years on the programme I’m now a fully-fledged and certified Business Analyst in the team.

What does a typical day working here look like for you? There’s never a ‘typical’ day in Change Delivery, it varies depending on the project we’re working on and the stage of that project. If I were to try to describe typical aspects of my role though, it would be that we liaise with different stakeholders across the business to ensure we can deliver the next projects to time and budget. This liaising is typically in an analysis capacity; this is where I help to translate the business vision into how we technically and operationally land the vision in our current operating mode.

How have you made a difference in your role? I feel we’re always making a difference, we deliver change. In my time here I’ve been part of project teams that have helped launch changes to our telephone packages, launch a new assurance model for our Broadband and Talk customers, and helped launch the service aspect of Sky Mobile for both our device and SIM launches!

What’s been your proudest moment since working here? The proudest moment was seeing the Sky Mobile adverts appearing on prime time television. I remember sitting with my parents and being really proud to say that I helped deliver the product! It’s not until you’re away from the rush of the office that I sometimes realise the magnitude of the projects I get involved in with Change.

What’s the most enjoyable thing about your job? I love solving problems in a collaborative and supportive atmosphere. My team here in Change are so knowledgeable, so creative and so supportive!

Describe your work/life balance? Sometimes the going can get a bit tough in a project – unfortunately it’s the nature of project delivery. There’s always a bit of hype and a rush before we go live with something, but that’s where the excitement is! That’s made up for with flexible working locations, great work incentives and you can always get a few hours back if you’ve worked a few extra earlier in the week.

What advice would you give to others trying to develop their career? Seek out people in your team who have a spark and inspire you, then approach them and ask for advice. Perhaps ask them about their career and whether they’d like to mentor you! There's so much experience and knowledge out there, generally with people who can’t wait to share it with you.

An interesting fact/something no one else knows about you?  Outside of my work, I enjoy playing ten pin bowling! I’ve been fortunate enough to represent Scotland internationally at events all over the world, including the World Cup in Shanghai, China last year!

Ryan tells us there's more to Hanukkah than bringing doughnuts to work

It's Hannukah – a festival of lights.

Hannukah is one of the newest Jewish festivals, set around 2,200 years ago in the midst of a revolt by the Jewish Maccabees against the Hellenist Emperor, who was threatening the Jewish religion, culture and identity.

The rebellion was successful, and in the aftermath of the battle, the prayer Temple was cleaned up and put back into use. An essential component of the Temple was the ‘everlasting light’ (which, by definition, was required to be lit permanently). A search for oil to fuel the light revealed only sufficient oil to last for 1 day; however it actually lasted for 8 days, until more oil was sourced - this being the miracle of Hannukah.

The festival lasts for eight nights, to represent the time the oil was aflame. It’s customary to light a ‘hannukiah’- a nine branched candelabra which can hold a candle for each day, along with the ‘shamash’, the candle which is used to light the other candles. An additional candle is added to the hannukiah each night, so there are nine flames lit by the end of the festival.

It’s also customary to eat oily foods such as doughnuts and latkes (fried potato cakes), as well as for children to play a game called ‘dreidel’, which involves spinning a four sided spinning top – each side representing a part of the story.

Over these eight days, I'll be lighting candles with my family each evening, attempting to make latkes, and will bring in doughnuts for my lucky colleagues.

Hannukah's a highly enjoyable and popular festival. If you see any public candelabras on view until the 20th December, you’ll now know why.

What area of Sky do you work in and what do you do on a daily basis? I work in the Retentions department of our Uddingston Contact Centre. My main focus is providing our customers with great service, ensuring they have the best possible experience.  

How did you get into your role? I heard that this was a great place to work so I've decided to apply. That was over a year ago now, the time has flown by!  

How have you made a difference in your role / what’s been your proudest moment working here? One of the difference I've been able to make in my role is becoming the quality champion in my team. As the quality champion, I provide important updates to my team regarding the quality of our conversations with customers and the service we're providing.   

My proudest moment since being here has to be when I was entered into the draw for tickets to the Anthony Joshua fight because of my performance at work, and won!   

What’s the most enjoyable thing about your job? Every day is different, the fact that each shift is so diverse and being able to speak to so many customers around the UK keeps my role interesting.  

Describe your contact centre or area of the business - what makes it a great place to work? Uddingston is a fantastic place to work! We are one of the smallest contact centres which makes us unique and feel like a family. Everyone is so close and friendly which helps us all work together well and keep the morale high.  

Have you had the opportunity to progress in your role? What advice would you give to others trying to develop their career? I've had lots of opportunities to progress and develop in my role. For example, I was given the opportunity to spend a day side by side with our newest recruits coaching them on taking customer calls. I have also been given the chance to look after my own team when my manager has been helping in other areas of the business – which was really rewarding.  

The key to progress within your role here is being yourself and showcasing your skills and strengths. 

An interesting fact no one else knows about you: I really enjoy snowboarding in my spare time.
