Check out Mwaka’s exciting work experience in Entertainment
“I most enjoyed the company of my peers, the diversity and range of departments within Entertainment and the enthusiasm of teams to remain efficient throughout daily tasks”
Job title / Experience you’re taking or had: Entertainment Work Experience
Describe your role in one word: Entertaining (hehe)
Describe a typical day: In Entertainment, the type of day depended on which department you were designated to. That is, a day in the Drama dept. varied greatly from the Comedy dept. or Production (as expected). For example, working within the Comedy dept, I was given the opportunity to read through comedy scripts from external production companies and comment on their suitability to Sky. While some inserts were particularly funny, there were some comedy scripts that had no comedy. Nonetheless, such feedback and/or criticisms would then be passed onto other members of the department in order to gauge a potential general public response and contribute to future decision making.
Describe your work/life balance at Sky? During my placement, working hours were 10am-5pm. Throughout the day, you were permitted to help yourself to free hot drinks and/or fruit, and take a one hour lunch break. Several tasks were usually set - of great interest and particularly enjoyable, I often wished the day lasted longer! I was also invited to the premiere of Neil Gaiman's Likely Stories and had the privileging of boasting about it to my family.
What do you enjoy the most about role and what’s surprised you the most? I most enjoyed the company of my peers, the diversity and range of departments within Entertainment and the enthusiasm of teams to remain efficient throughout daily tasks. I was surprised at how many different roles and skilled individuals were able to work both strategically and orderly to maintain what we appreciate in Sky Entertainment.Oh, and the free hot drink selection within staff rooms was also very enjoyable.
What’s your work environment like? I found the work environment very friendly and informal but this did not excuse any lack in daily tasks being met. People at Sky cultivated an atmosphere that was hard working, well managed and fun. I was freely able to ask questions without feeling intimidated or as if I was being of great disturbance.
Your top application tip for people applying / what did you do to stand out? Be genuine in your application! Working at Sky provides an invaluable experience but such must be matched with a sincerity in motive. I applied because I am most intrigued and enthused by Entertainment which became the incentive behind my application as opposed to a shallow desire to just work at Sky per se. It’s important to acknowledge why Sky, in particular, best suits and aligns with your goals and interests, and reflect this in your application. In all, just be you! Your 'you' will stand out.
An interesting fact/something no one else knows about you: I don't just have midnight snacks, but also at 1am, 2am, 3am etc… I have a distinctive love for food.
