Interested in coding and programming, but have no previous technical experience? This evening aims to provide a unique and supportive environment for girls to find out how to begin a career in Software Development. You don't have to be a ‘tech wizz’, but you NEED to be an enthusiastic female, aged 16-24 and have an interest in Technology.

How our programme works:

As an Apprentice on this programme, you’ll be placed within one of three teams depending on the outcome of your assessment centre. The teams are as follows:

  • Conditional Access Team – This department is responsible for the testing and supporting our encryption technologies and also for controlling the Viewing Cards across Sky UK. You’ll learn about the full lifecycle involved to ensure the delivery of a seamless customer experience.

 

  • IDS Development Team – In this role, you’ll play a key part in implementing the best approach to meet the requirements of our customers. You’ll show your analytical skills in developing the most appropriate solution and demonstrate your attention to detail by testing and delivering these requirements. It’s a vital role but we’ll provide you with all the support and guidance you need to deliver great results. To be successful, you’ll have a strong maths background, ideally having completed Highers in Maths.

 

  • UK Information Systems Team – You will gain experience in a number of Software Engineering areas through rotations, which may include Testing, Automation, Technical Analysis, Operational Support and Development. The teams provide services to both our Contact Centre and Engineer communities as well as supporting various online and interactive services provided to Sky’s 11 million UK customer base.

How our programme works:

As an Apprentice on this two year course, you’ll be placed within one of three teams depending on the outcome of your assessment centre. The teams include:

 

  • Operations – Through workplace rotations, you will learn about planning live programme feeds, checking incoming signals for quality, ensuring programme schedules come together and that our channels stay on air over satellite and online.

The department operates 24/7 and the role includes 12 hour shift rotations from 07:00-19:00 or 19:00—07:00 (although these hours can vary in some Operational departments). You’ll be aged 18 or over to be considered for this role, be a strong team player and logical thinker, plus have excellent attention to detail.

 

  • Integration & Test – This department is responsible for testing the technology that connects our TV systems to our online and satellite products such as Sky Q, Sky Store, NowTV and Sky Go. Things you’ll learn will include finding out how our TV software works and how to find bugs and work with other technology teams to create solutions to problems discovered during testing. An interest in the testing process is key and a curious mind with a passion for problem-solving.   

 

  • Network Operations – Through workplace rotations, you will experience the full Network Operations lifecycle giving you exposure to all functions that provide support 24/7. This includes our Front Line Service Operations, Security, Broadband, Talk, Sky Mobile and many more. A collaborative and personable approach is important particularly as you move around teams as part of the rotations.

As an Apprentice on the Software Engineering Academy, you’ll be at the forefront of digital innovation as you start building your career.

  • This course lasts for 18 months, upon which successful completion of the qualification you’ll achieve a Diploma in IT, Software, Web & Telecoms Professionals, Level 4.
  • For the first 4 weeks, you’ll be on a boot camp training programme giving you experience in software engineering principles and languages such as Agile, Java development, test-driven development and continuous build and integration.
  • You’ll then be placed in different areas of Sky to work on real projects called ‘Educational Projects’. You’ll work alongside senior Software Engineers and experience everyday life at Sky in an exciting technical environment.  
  • You’ll have the chance to get to grips with open source tools and web technologies such as Ruby, Scala, Javascript, PHP, Java, HTML, CSS, Node JS, Python, Jenkins, GIT, etc.    
  • Happy to talk flexible working.

What we look for

  • A passion for technology and a keen interest in programming and coding.
  • Ideally you’ll have some coding experience. This could be from school or from having a go at home.
  • Good communication and team working skills.

About the Programme

How the programme works:

As an Apprentice on the Home Service programme, you’ll help make sure every Sky customer you meet has a brilliant experience. You’ll build up the technical skills you need as well the knowledge, confidence and experience to offer great service and become a real ambassador for Sky.  Above all, you’ll deliver a world class in home experience for every customer.

  • This is a one year programme, after which, upon successful completion of the programme, you will join as a permanent member of the team.
  • You’ll be given your own vehicle to travel to our customers’ homes. Supported by experts, you’ll learn not only how to install Sky but also showcase our amazing products, services and content to our customers.
  • For the first 6 weeks, you’ll be learning all the basic skills you’ll need to become an engineer.
  • As well as a buddy, you’ll also be assigned a line manager and assessor to support you through your day to day tasks and qualification, keeping up to date with your progress.
  • There’ll be support for you to grow and develop with peer mentoring and work shadowing opportunities in the contact centres, retail stores, and network events.
  • Your typical working pattern will be 40 hours per week, Monday - Sunday, working 9 hours per day with 1 hour lunch break (including bank holidays and weekends).

 

What we look for:

  • Excellent communication and team working skills.
  • We’re a friendly bunch here, so a positive and collaborative mind-set is really important.
  • You’ll also need a full UK driving licence (with no more than 6 points).

How our programme works

For the first week, you’ll be on a bespoke Marketing immersion week. This will provide you with the fundamental skills needed to understand the basics of Marketing. Following this, your first year will be spent in one of two Brand teams (Digital Marketing or Mobile Marketing). The second year of your programme will be spent doing two six month rotations across our Trading teams.

Digital Marketing (Year 1)You’ll learn about developing digital marketing communications, gain an understanding of multiple digital media channels, predominantly display advertising, video and native (including social). You’ll work closely with our media planning and buying agency to ensure the highest standards are met across our activity. The team is highly ambitious, driven and dynamic and prides itself on driving the development of world-class approaches to Digital Marketing.

Mobile Marketing (Year 1)You’ll help to build awareness of our latest innovation, Sky Mobile. You’ll support the team in managing the successful delivery of campaigns in line with agreed objectives and brand metrics. You’ll also be working with creative agencies to develop and execute compelling campaign ideas whist ensuring the work is on time and on budget.

Sales and Marketing (Year 2)

You’ll support the Consumer Marketing Team in the marketing and sales performance of our communications and entertainment products. Deeply embedded in the brand, you’ll get an understanding of everything there is to know about our products in order to gain new customers and keep existing ones too. You’ll also help ensure all our products are commercially viable and exactly what our customers want.

How our programme works:

As an Apprentice on this brand new programme, you’ll join the Sky News national team reporting the news from around the UK. This role demands strong journalistic instincts, an appetite for breaking news and a determination to get under the skin of the UK.  You’ll be expected to have a passion for researching and delivering stories on a range of topics including health, education, crime, social affairs, technology, consumer and economics.

Based in our Osterley headquarters you’ll be good at developing excellent contacts. You’ll work with the planning team to see how a story starts and is worked on, the intake desk to understand how the news is gathered and gets onto all our platforms every day, and out on the road with some of our field producers and correspondents to be at the cutting edge of a story.

  • This is a two year course
  • In the first year, you’ll spend the first three months at college as you work towards achieving your qualification, attending Sky’s offices as and when required to support your training.  This will include writing skills, media law, ethics and how to structure and develop a story.
  • Following the first three months, you’ll learn on the job, understanding how the news is put together from the planning process through production and editing to the finished report. You’ll also shadow some of our best reporters and camera crews in the country.
  • In the second year, you’ll be given more responsibility, building on everything you’ve learnt in your first year. You’ll have the opportunity to find, research and make your own content for Sky News platforms.

Please note: When working within the team you’ll work with a wide range of Sky content, some of which is not suitable for under 18s.  As a responsible employer and broadcaster, we therefore cannot accept applications from people who wouldn’t have reached the age of 18 by 11 September 2017.

  • This is a two year course.
  • Qualification achieved: Diploma in Journalism, Level 3.
  • In the first year, you’ll rotate around key departments of the Sky Sports News operation. Rotations include the planning desk, production team, graphics and the digital content team. You’ll also be given opportunities to shadow reporters and work on location.
  • You’ll spend time at college working towards achieving your qualification with support of a dedicated tutor.
  • In the second year, you’ll choose an area to specialise in.
