Mike from our Change Delivery Team recommends creating good networks

Name: Michael Woods
Job title: Senior Business Analyst
What area of Sky do you work in? Change Delivery
What’s your career journey been like up until now? Before I came to work here I didn’t really think about a “career,” I just thought about a job. After different roles in Hospitality, Retail and Web/email Marketing, I started in here eleven years ago as an Editor on the sky.com/help website. I was promoted to manage the Editorial team and enjoyed launching self-service billing tools, virtual assistants, and dynamic help journeys. I worked closely with Business Analysts in the Change team, so when I wanted a change of role (but not a change of company), I discussed the BA role with them and applied, starting on web projects before being assigned to a variety of operational improvement projects and product launches. I was promoted to Senior Business Analyst a couple of years later.
What does a typical day working here look like for you? I start early, reading and thinking while the office is quiet and my brain is firing up; project documents, business news, tech papers, ideas that people have sent me. After breakfast we have project stand ups to touch base with the team; share any bumps in the road and plan our priorities for the day. As our work is very collaborative, we have a busy schedule of workshops and meetings; to make the best use of people’s time I plan and prepare around this, gathering and reviewing requirements, drawing customer journeys and process maps, and spending time with business and technology stakeholders, helping find solutions to their problems. As a Senior Business Analyst, I also spend time planning analysis activities with the project managers and supporting the analysis team.
If you’ve been here over one year, how have you made a difference in your role? Experience on lots of projects means I’ve a pretty good understanding of how our various departments work, so I can help my colleagues and stakeholders in Change colleagues best understand the priorities and challenges of different teams they work with. I’ve a good network of experts for those “I don’t know how to fix this…but I know someone who does,” moments. I’ve learned what’s really important in project delivery and how to avoid getting lost in paperwork, so I can help others prioritise and focus.
What’s been your proudest moment since working here? Hired an editor, supported his development and then handed over my old job to him when I moved to Change – it’s great seeing people grow their careers. I always enjoy launch days; seeing the first orders for NOW TV broadband coming in after two years of preparation was a great feeling.
What’s the most enjoyable thing about your job? Problem-solving; making things work better for customers and colleagues is really satisfying.
Describe your work/life balance? I have a long commute and a young family so I manage my work and home life carefully and rely on Skype and mobiles to stay on top of things. Perks like medical cover, and having Amazon lockers, a mailroom, a barber etc. in the office help keep my weekends free.
What advice would you give to others trying to develop their career? Make connections. I’ve had great advice and mentoring from colleagues at Sky, and there’s a close team of analysts here who share tips, training and opportunities.
An interesting fact/something no one else knows about you? I tried my hand at stand-up comedy. I was utterly awful at it, so luckily this was before people could make videos on their phones and shame you on social media.
