Sky Careers

Name: Brian Christie

Job title: Development Specialist

What area of Sky do you work in and what do you do on a daily basis? I work in our Know How department and my role revolves around the learning and development of our people. My role focuses on the delivery of learning solutions, and the facilitation and coaching for our Engineers and Advisors. From roped access and roof work with our Engineers to sales training with those in our contact centres, I travel around the UK to deliver training. My role allows me to focus on developing our talent.

How did you get into your role? I initially started as an Engineer in 2008 in Glasgow. I did a 6 month secondment as a Fleet Administrator in 2010/2011 and on my return to the field I was successful in becoming a Specialist Engineer, which was a new role here. When a secondment opportunity came up to cover the Transformation Trainer role in Home Service I immediately applied as it had always been a goal of mine. I was in that role for almost two years before becoming a Development Specialist in late 2016.

How have you made a difference in your role/what’s been your proudest moment working here? I’m often the first person a new Engineer meets on their first day which means I get to give them a warm welcome and show them how great this place is to work. I’m always proud to see people weeks and months later who are thriving in their new role.

What’s the most enjoyable thing about your job? My role means I get to be involved in projects when they are just beginning and get to see the whole process from beginning to end. I love meeting new people and having 12 new employees arriving on their first day with us is always a really enjoyable time and one I always look forward to.

Have you had the opportunity to progress in your role? What advice would you give to others trying to develop their career? This company has been fantastic for my career, I started almost 9 years ago and never looked back. I’ve been in a number of different roles here and have always been encouraged to stretch myself and develop in my role.

My advice for people looking to develop their careers is to start straight away with your own personal development. There are lots and lots of online resources here and if you know the area you want to work in then start your development towards that, as soon as you can. The other piece of advice I would give is to use secondment opportunities wisely. Have a clear goal for what you would like to achieve on your secondment and how that fits into your greater career goals.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. I left the army in 2005 and that was when I applied for the role here as an Engineer. Also, I’m a huge history buff who can’t get enough of podcasts on different historical topics, I love to travel and visit countries that have great food.
