The Explore Sky- Software Engineering insight day will allow you to to discover more about career options at Sky.

Software Developers

Whatever project you work on, you’ll make an impact from day one, producing software that fully contributes to our future success.

Our Software Engineering teams cover web, mobile and internet TV. They develop key websites such as Sky.com and Sky News, as well as our flagship products like NOW TV and Sky Q.  This means you could be working on technology which you’ve used at home, seen advertised on TV and is used by millions of our customers. You’ll also be encouraged to develop skills in a broad range of cutting-edge technologies which will equip you to contribute to our current and future products.

Our graduates on this programme help develop the software that underpins how our products work.  You’ll also play a vital role in the technology that improves the way we work internally. Whatever your project, you’ll be making an impact from day one, producing software that fully contributes to our future success

How the programme works

On this revolutionary seven-month Developer programme, five weeks’ training will give you a complete grounding in software engineering principles, Java development, test-driven development and continuous build and integration. We’ll then support you to work on projects to develop and embed your skills for the next six months. Once the programme ends, you’ll move into a Software Development team on a permanent basis..

Your skills

You’ll either have, or be on track to complete, an undergraduate degree in any discipline. You’ll love all aspects of technology and ideally have some experience in developing software applications. You’ll also be familiar with Agile project methodology, and have contributed to or used open source technologies in the past. Being able to pick things up quickly and work well as part of a team will be key.

They’ve learnt about the technology underpinning broadband so fast that everything else seems like dial-up. They’ve helped launch new channels, on-going development of Sky Q, Sky AdSmart and NOW TV, as well as the technology behind services used by our customers and on-screen Sky Sports commentators.

How the programme works

Livingston, near Edinburgh is the home of over 700 Technology staff whose focus is on delivering an excellent customer experience.  As part of the Graduate program in here your rotations could be in areas such as Analysis, Development, Infrastructure and Network Operations, Cyber Security, Performance Engineering, Test and Data Science, developing and supporting the key systems and services for our wide customer base.

The programme starts with a five-week induction to help you get started before you go into three 7.5-month business or security focused placements around Technology.

You could work with our teams in TV & Digital Platforms, Network Services and Information Security where we have exciting opportunities to work on our latest mobile apps, launch new channels, explore new technologies to support our internal staff and keep our systems and company secure.

Our experts working in Insight and Decision Science (IDS) are leading the way when it comes to understanding consumers and creating actionable insight about their behaviours, attitudes, needs, how they like to interact and what makes them tick. This consumer intelligence helps deliver a better experience and service to customers and drives better decision making.

About the programme

This exciting opportunity will see you working as part of the team responsible for Data Science and Analytics, Research, Customer communication, Digital Implementation, Insight and Reporting. And that’s not all, to kick start your career at Sky, you’ll work towards completing relevant qualifications alongside your experience.

During your programme you’ll work on projects which involve:

  • Solving complex business problems using a wide range of data sources. This ranges from data warehousing and cloud computing to state-of-the-art statistical and computational techniques used and on-the-job learning can open up opportunities in a variety of specialisms such as Machine Learning, AI and Visual Design.  
  • Doing research on understanding customer decision-making process and translating these findings into business focused actions, allowing the consumer voice to be at the heart of Sky.
  • Analysing data and acting as a bridge between research and marketing business areas to focus on the interests of the consumer and features of a brand
  •  Interpreting trends in human behaviors which aims to increase effectiveness of a product or service for the consumer, as well as increase sales for mutual benefit.
  • Collection, deployment and interpretation of data that allows Sky to acquire, develop and retain their customers by targeted marketing

Finance (Livingston)

With constant delivery of innovation and growth, our Finance team is critical to success and heavily embedded in the business, giving you exposure to exciting projects you couldn’t find anywhere else while you study for your CIMA qualification.

Duration: 3 years
Requirements: 2:1 degree, or equivalent

Our Finance team is rooted at the core of what we do, meaning we offer a hands-on experience of being an Accountant in business. You’ll gain experience in producing the financial and operational reporting that will enable us to continue growing every year and, in addition, you’ll complete analysis and partner the business supporting our customer service function.

It’ll be a real challenge – stretching your analytical mind and working with our Commercial Finance teams across the business. But we’ll make sure you get all the support you need to develop valuable and practical experience, and become a rising star in our Finance team.

You'll be based across our Finance functions in our Livingston (Watermark) and Dunfermline sites.  On-site facilities include a health and fitness centre and subsidised restaurants.

Change Delivery

Be at the centre of delivering large scale projects across Sky that change the game for our customers.

About the programme

On this programme, you have the option of choosing between one of two paths:

  • As a Business Analyst (BA), where you’ll be focused on finding innovative solutions, designing an ideal customer experience and working with stakeholders from across the business to define and manage business requirements for change. It’s a role that requires intellectual and analytical rigour.
  • As a Project Manager (PM), where you'll help deliver the change successfully by leading and delivering through the project team, making sure everything runs to schedule, to the agreed budget and to the commercial and business objectives.

In either roles as BA or PM, you’ll:

  • Have  the ability to communicate complex change issues to multiple stakeholders, and also to challenge existing working practices and procedures to make sure that customer needs are kept front and centre of any new projects and initiatives.
  • Be able to build strong working relationships with your stakeholders – including your project team, business stakeholders, and other business areas such as IT, Operations and Marketing
  • Be supported throughout the programme you will be supported by managers and colleagues to enable you to do your very best work. 

 

Your Skills

  • You’ll also be a confident communicator with an analytical mind – able to communicate complex change issues to different people and to challenge existing working practices and procedures.

Finance (Osterley)

With constant delivery of innovation and growth, our Finance team is critical to success and heavily embedded in the business, giving you exposure to exciting projects you couldn’t find anywhere else while you study for your CIMA qualification.

Do you want to help deliver, as well as report, business results? Our Finance team is rooted at the core of what we do, meaning we offer a very hands-on experience of being an Accountant in the business. You’ll complete analysis that will support new product launches and help us make great decisions – like whether we should invest in a new TV show or a new piece of technology that could change the face of entertainment! In addition, you could gain experience in our Corporate Finance function from managing the company-wide financial results, to investor relations and looking at mergers and acquisitions.

It’ll be a real challenge – stretching your analytical mind and commercial knowledge, working with people at different levels, in different departments and across the business. Procurement at Sky

Delivering brilliant entertainment, products and services to our customers is no easy feat. And at Sky, we’re always live. So we depend on our Procurement teams to source the most diverse range of products and services imaginable; from telecoms, to fleet transportation and broadcasting equipment. And this is where you’ll come in, making sure everyone we work with has all the right tools to deliver the game-changing products and services we’re known for.

How the programme works

As a graduate in the team, you’ll rotate in four placements over the course of this three year development programme across the functional procurement areas within: Technology, Entertainment and Group, which includes our Corporate and Marketing operations. You’ll experience the full range of work, while working towards your full CIPS (Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply) qualification giving you a complete grounding in all things Procurement. 

Some of the key responsibilities include

  • Understand current markets, future trends and suppliers’ business and commercial strategies to assist procurement objectives.
  • Create sourcing strategies, leading / supporting for the relevant portfolios re commercial interaction, meetings and negotiations with stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Involvement with entire procurement process, including supplier identification, internal stakeholder identification and commercial / contract negotiation.
  • Liaise with the various stakeholders and their teams keeping one another fully appraised of supplier communication and involvement.
  • Understand current and future opportunities within key stakeholder areas.
  • Coordinate the procurement process and ensure knowledge transfer of best procurement practice to the business stakeholders.
  • You’ll take the lead in negotiating with suppliers, working closely with the internal teams at Sky to identify ways to improve how we do things.

Marketing at Sky

Great TV, no matter how brilliant, is a waste of time if no-one watches it. Even with a brand as well-known as Sky, we need to remind people of the outstanding drama, comedy and up-to-the-minute news and sports on offer. Not to mention all the enticing deals and additional products available. You can’t help but have spotted the amazing work our Marketing team do. From billboards to TV adverts, we’re pretty much everywhere. But Marketing at Sky is much more than that.

How the programme works

During this two-year programme, you’ll complete two 12 month rotations in two of the areas below. 

  • ‘Above the line’ (ATL) communication, working in a brand team. This could be in Sports, Movies, Now TV, TV Products, Sky Store, or Sky Difference. You might be working with external agencies, writing briefs and signing off creative designs seen by millions.
  • ‘Below the line’ (BTL) communication, linking with creative agencies. You’ll gain exposure to multiple BTL media channels such as direct mail, email and door drops working across Sky with our teams from Broadband to Customer Management.
  • Strategy & Planning, as part of a Proposition, Planning, or Strategic team. Working in teams like Strategy and Planning, Media Planning or Product Propositions, you’ll apply your strategic thinking and make insightful recommendations based on data and research.
  • Commercial Awareness, within a Commercial team within Marketing. You’ll review the analysis and the stats, reviewing our strategy to make sure targets are met. At the same time you'll gain a firm understanding of the external marketplace and Sky’s position in it.

Your skills

  • You’ll need to hold or be on track to achieve an undergraduate degree in any area
  • You’ll need to demonstrate how much you want to work in Marketing at Sky
  • A confident communicator with an analytical mind, you’ll be able to work well as part of a team, juggle priorities and hit deadlines
